New report from Chartered Institution of Highways and Transport - read it!!

Better planning, better transport, better places is a new advice note published by the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT).It contains advice that is relevant to anyone engaged with Local Plans, and new developments in particular.

Update on LCWIP progress

This from Andy Mouland at WSCC: - LCWIPs – the Districts and Boroughs are all on track to produce drafts by end of November.   A lot of work is going on right now (e.g. desire line mapping and street audits) and the intention is to use some of the remaining WSP days for business case training towards the end of the project.   WSCC had a useful meeting last week with Simon Pratt from Sustrans, who is currently re-writing the A&W LCWIP.   The next partners meeting is on the morning of 17th October.   The W&C steering group will be updated that afternoon.

West Sussex County Council's Cycle Design Guide goes live!

After many months of hard work, the Cycling Design Guide is now part of the mandatory reference material for Local Planning Authorities and WSCC Officers.     It is here  - https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/media/13164/cycling_design_guide.pdf

New cycle way opened! Medmerry - Pagham

A new, 3km cycle route has been completed, linking Pagham Nature Reserve with Medmerry Nature Reserve, boosting facilities for residents, visitors and wildlife enthusiasts alike. The county council’s Public Rights of Way team worked with The Manhood Peninsula Partnership on ideas to bolster tourism in the area - and found that cycling provision was under represented. From this, a £400,000 scheme was devised.

Cycle Forum members elected to Horsham District Council

We now have 4 new cycle forum members elected to Horsham District Council: Ruth Fletcher, Frances Haigh, John Milne (Lib Dem) plus Mike Croker (Green) and a further Green, Bob Platt.    Horsham Lib Dems stood on a manifesto of working with Horsham District Cycling Forum, so all 13 should provide positive support for better cycle infrastructure.  Peter Smith has been reelected in Crawley (Lab).  Paul Brown has been elected in Mid-Sussex District Council (Green), as has Richard Bates (Lib Dem).

WSCF submits comments on draft WSCC Cycling Design Guidelines

WSCC is consulting with selected interested parties on its Cycling Design Guidelines. This will be the first set of guidelines to be drawn up, owned and implemented by West Sussex. The Local Planning Authorities and the WSCF were sent the draft at end February with a return date of 31 March. The WSCF has submitted a composite comment made up of comment from each of the Cycle Forums in West Sussex.

Christ's Hospital success!

The Horsham and District Cycle Forum, and the Open Spaces Society have been critical in saving the bridleway through the school grounds at Christ’s Hospital.

WSCF registered as a stakeholder with NICE

Following a response to a NICE consultation, NICE requested that WSCF become a registered stakeholder.   NICE wrote to me by name - "We would encourage you to register as a stakeholder. Comments received from non-registered organisations and individuals are not summarised in the summary report presented to the committee but are included as an appendix. These comments are not made available on the NICE website. However, if they result in changes to the quality standard this is recorded in the committee meeting minutes." 

NICE is National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.

Cllr Elkins takes over from Cllr Lanzer at Highways

Cllr Roger Elkins takes on responsibility for Highways and Infrastructure from Cllr Lanzer. Roger is an experienced Councillor at District and County level – he represents East Preston and Ferring at County level. Before retirement he was in the construction industry. Roger said “I am delighted to be joining the Cabinet and look forward to working with the Highways team on issues that are important to people in West Sussex who use our roads. He replaces Bob Lanzer who becomes the Cabinet Member for Corporate relations.

Flansham - Clymping shared use path - open!!!

Although people had been using it for some weeks leading up to the formal opening on August 2nd 2018, now the path is finally fully completed and open!  It's taken many years of work, hiccups, major set backs and now - finally -  success.    

West Sussex Cycle Forum chairman Geoff Farrell said: “At last - a way to cycle safely between Felpham and Littlehampton!
